Muscat – Muscat Municipality has awarded the construction contract for the Muttrah Square project, which won first place in the inaugural Bilarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design. The project is set to introduce a new urban character to the wilayat and offer wider vantage points overlooking the corniche and Muttrah Fort.

Ahmed bin Mohammed al Humaidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, said the development forms a key part of the municipality’s plan to enhance Muttrah’s tourism appeal while preserving its heritage. “The project is more than just an urban development – it embodies an ambitious vision to revive the visual memory of the six wilayats of the governorate and achieve harmony between authenticity and modernity,” he stated.

He noted that the design introduces high-quality urban elements aimed at improving liveability, enriching the tourism experience, and supporting the goals of the National Urban Development Strategy 2040, which seeks to build vibrant and identity-driven cities. “Cultural preservation and architectural innovation can co-exist to create public spaces that reflect both heritage and future aspirations.”

Situated in a strategic part of the capital, the 7,500sqm development is intended to strengthen the historical and touristic value of Muttrah. Its centrepiece is a 5m-wide bridge designed to appear as though floating over the sea, inspired by the sword of Imam al Salt bin Malik al Kharusi. The structure will frame Muttrah’s landmarks in a U-shaped panoramic view.

The project also includes a multifunctional plaza featuring a dancing fountain and lighting designed to reflect the movement of the sea. The surrounding courtyard will serve as a family-friendly open space with green areas, pedestrian paths and additional facilities.
