Muscat – The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Oman Airports have approved new international flight routes this month as part of efforts to boost air traffic and attract more tourists to the sultanate.
In a statement, CAA confirmed that it has granted Red Wings Airlines approval to operate a weekly flight between Muscat and the Russian resort city of Sochi, starting from June 22.
Oman Airports welcomed the move, describing it as a strategic step to attract international carriers, expand its network of global destinations, and support both economic and tourism growth.
‘We extend our sincere thanks to CAA for issuing the necessary permits for the operation of Russian airline Red Wings,’ Oman Airports said. ‘The addition to our network is a significant milestone that enhances air connectivity and opens new avenues for international cooperation.’
In a separate announcement, Oman Airports also confirmed the launch of a new route by Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo, which has commenced direct flights between Kannur in Kerala, India, and Muscat. The new service, launched last week, will operate three times a week, offering more travel options for passengers and strengthening connections between Oman and the southern Indian state.
The launch of these new routes aligns with Oman Airports’ broader strategy to boost economic and tourism activity by promoting direct international connections.
Airports in Oman reported an 8.5% fall in passenger numbers in March 2025, with 3.54mn passengers passing through the country’s terminals, down from 3.84mn in March 2024.
Muscat International Airport remains the main driver, with 3.18mn passenger passing through it till March this year.
