Tony Awards 2025: Musicals and Hollywood stars shine bright in nomination list

New York City, US – The 78th Tony Awards nominations were officially announced by Tony winners Sarah Paulson and Wendell Pierce at Sofitel New York, revealing a strong field of contenders from both Broadway newcomers and veteran performers. A total of 42 productions—21 musicals and 21 plays—were deemed eligible this year.

Leading the nominations with 10 nods each are Death Becomes Her, Maybe Happy Ending—a poignant love story between two robots—and Buena Vista Social Club. Other musical standouts include Death Outlaw and Operation Mincemeat.

Hollywood talent recognised on Broadway
Several well-known film and television stars earned their place among the nominees. George Clooney received his first Tony nomination for his Broadway debut in Good Night and Good Luck, while Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink was recognised for John Proctor Is the Villain. Bob Odenkirk (Glengarry Glen Ross), Sarah Snook (The Picture of Dorian Gray), and Mia Farrow (The Roommate) also earned acting nominations.

Audra McDonald makes history
Broadway icon Audra McDonald secured her 11th Tony nomination for her role in Gypsy, making her the most nominated performer in the awards’ history.

Design and technical excellence celebrated
Renowned designers Rob Howell (The Hills of California), Paul Tazewell (Death Becomes Her), and Catherine Zuber (Just in Time) were among those recognised. Filipino-American designer Clint Ramos was nominated for Maybe Happy Ending, adding to his growing acclaim.

Special Tony Awards will be presented to the technical effects team behind Stranger Things: The First Shadow, and to the live musicians of Buena Vista Social Club. This year’s Tony Honours will also celebrate the contributions of Michael Price, New 42, and the New York Public Library.

Lifetime achievement and advocacy awards
Theatre legend Harvey Fierstein will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, while Celia Keenan-Bolger will be honoured with the Isabelle Stevenson Award for her advocacy work through the arts.

Ceremony details
The 78th Tony Awards will take place on 8 June 2025 at Radio City Music Hall. Wicked star and Tony winner Cynthia Erivo will host the ceremony, which will be broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+, succeeding last year’s host Ariana DeBose.
