A walk in the woods

1 May 2025 By MOHAMMED TAHA

A new book by Oman’s avid adventurer Khalid al Anqudi, who has been passionate about travelling around the globe, explores forest adventures across Asia and Africa

Muscat – Omani mountaineer, adventurer and travel writer Khalid Said al Anqudi, who has journeyed through more than 83 countries and authored 14 travel books, has released another captivating title: Tasaka fi al Gabah (A walk in the woods).

The new book takes readers deep into the forests, mountains and cultures of Asia and Africa, unravelling unique terrain and experiences of the author who has been documenting not just his visits but also the lessons he learnt through his journeys.

In an exclusive interview with Muscat Daily, Anqudi revealed that the book, completed in 2023, was officially launched at the 29th Muscat International Book Fair on April 23, 2025. Spanning 108 pages and divided into five chapters, the book serves as a vivid travelogue, sharing personal stories, cultural encounters and photos of breathtaking landscapes from his adventures.

“One chapter explores the lush forests of Dandeli and Kashmir in India, while another takes readers through the mysterious mountain rainforests of Sumatra in Indonesia,” Anqudi said. “There’s also a chapter on Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park – home to some of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife and some of the kindest people I’ve met.”

Anqudi recounted several tense moments during his travels which had been both, exciting as well as dangerous.

“While camping in a mountainous area in Indonesia, we awoke to see a tiger darting past our tents. It was a heart-stopping moment,” he said. “In an African forest, we once mistook rustling branches for an animal attack, only to discover it was just the wind – an incident that ended in laughter.”

Of all the destinations he has visited, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania remains closest to his heart. “It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen,” he said. “The highland plains, Savannah and forests are rich in biodiversity and home to the semi-nomadic Maasai people, who live in harmony with nature. The Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, is also a spendid global ecological treasure.”

Reflecting on his journey through Sumatra, Anqudi described the dreamlike atmosphere of the Barisan Mountains. “Climbing into those mist-covered peaks felt like stepping into another world,” he said.

“The montane rainforests, which stretch over 1,600km, are home to rare species. I was fortunate to spot a Sumatran striped rabbit and Salvadori’s pheasant. The forest changes with elevation – from towering trees in the lower regions to moss-draped oaks cloaked in fog higher up.”

Talking about his camping experiences, Anqudi disclosed that the forests of Indonesia, India and Tanzania offered a deep immersion into the wild.

“Pitching a tent beneath towering trees, listening to the calls of the jungle, watching rare birds at dawn and glimpsing wild animals – these moments created an unforgettable connection with nature,” he said. “Whether spotting a leopard in India or hearing a chimpanzee’s call in Tanzania, the experience stirs awe and respect for wildlife.”

For Anqudi, camping is far more than a leisure activity. “It’s a way to reconnect with nature – and with ourselves,” he said. “It teaches patience, resilience and adaptability. Every trail builds confidence, every challenge strengthens problem-solving skills. Solitude brings reflection, while teamwork becomes instinctive. These journeys don’t just create memories—they shape character.”

Beyond documenting his travels, Anqudi hopes to inspire a spirit of curiosity and adventure in young readers. “Our youth need to widen their perspective of the world,” he said. “Parents must encourage children to read and explore.”

A passionate advocate for Omani tourism, Anqudi is also committed to promoting his homeland on the global stage. “I will continue to travel, learn, and share Oman’s beauty and culture with the world,” he said. “I’m currently working on translating my books into English, German and French to reach a broader audience.”
