Spain and Portugal hit by power outage, transport and airports at standstill

28 Apr 2025

Madrid, Spain – Vast areas of Spain and Portugal have been hit by a major power outage, paralysing transport systems, closing airports, and disrupting essential services including shops, hospitals, and telecommunications.

The Spanish power grid operator, Red Eléctrica, confirmed it is working urgently with energy companies to restore the electricity supply. In an official statement, the operator added, “Plans to restore the electricity supply have been activated in collaboration with companies in the sector following the zero that occurred in the peninsular system. The causes are being analysed and all resources are being dedicated to solving it. We will continue to report.”

The outage has caused widespread disruption across both countries. Traffic lights failed, airports suspended flights, and mobile phone networks and internet services were severely affected. Shops and businesses in multiple cities were forced to close, and public transport services were brought to a halt.

Emergency procedures have been activated, prioritising critical infrastructure such as hospitals and airport operations. The exact cause of the blackout is not yet known, but officials have confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
