Muscat – Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) held an awareness programme on electronic blackmail in Muscat on Wednesday highlighting the growing threat of cyber-extortion and the need for public vigilance in the digital age.

Organised in cooperation with Majan University College, the event was held under the patronage of Dr Hamad bin Abdullah al Maamari, Wali of Muttrah. It brought together students and members of the community to raise awareness on the psychological, social and financial risks linked to online blackmail.

Fatima bint Salem al Saadiya, Director of Department of Social Development in Muscat, said the increasing use of social media platforms presents both opportunities and risks.

“In our digital age, social media has become an essential part of our lives. While it fosters communication and knowledge sharing, it also presents serious challenges,” she said.

Fatima cited cyberbullying, identity theft, the spread of misinformation and violations of privacy as major concerns.

“Awareness programmes like this are vital in protecting the social fabric of Omani society. Digital platforms must be used as tools for creativity and growth, not exploitation.”

She urged individuals facing cyber-extortion or online harassment to report incidents to the authorities without delay.

The event featured a theatrical performance by students from Majan University College depicting the dangers of sharing personal information with strangers online. The performance aimed to underscore the importance of privacy and caution when using digital platforms.

Legal advisor Khalifa bin Marhoon al Rahbi presented a paper on the legal framework on electronic blackmail, explaining how the law addresses such offences and the role of public awareness in both prevention and legal recourse.

The awareness drive was part of MoSD’s broader efforts to promote safe digital behaviour and encourage responsible technology use in the community.
