Muscat – Oman has officially established a statistical society through a ministerial decision (No 121/2025) issued by H E Dr Laila bint Ahmed bin Awad al Najjar, Minister of Social Development.

The Oman Statistical Society will support national development efforts by promoting statistical research and strengthening the role of data in public policy and planning. It aims to advance academic and professional standards in the field, while encouraging knowledge exchange and the application of best practices in statistical methods.

According to the ministry, the society is intended to serve as a platform for collaboration between government and private institutions engaged in statistical work. By offering expert opinion and facilitating the sharing of resources, it will support more informed decision-making process.

The organisation also aims to build stronger ties with international and regional entities working in statistics, contributing to Oman’s global engagement in the field.

A key part of the society’s mission is to uphold high ethical standards and ensure professional integrity in statistical practice. Its governance will be overseen by a 12-member Board of Directors, elected for two-year terms.

Members may be re-elected at the end of each term. Funding will come from membership dues, donations, government support, income from activities, and returns from investments, in line with applicable regulations.

The establishment of the society is seen as a step forward in the institutional development of Oman’s statistical capabilities, providing a structured platform for experts to contribute to national progress.
