Sur – Oman’s National Committee for Emergency Management (NCEM), in collaboration with several government entities, launched a four-day national awareness campaign on the risks associated with weather phenomena, climate change, and tsunamis, in Sur, South Sharqiyah on Monday.

Organised under the slogan ‘Your Awareness for Your Safety’, the initiative aims to raise public awareness about natural disaster preparedness, particularly in relation to weather-related phenomena.

As part of the campaign’s opening activities, Captain Al Julanda bin Mohammed al Balushi, Head of Public Relations at the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority, delivered a lecture titled ‘Precautionary Measures for Dealing with Climate Change and Tsunamis’.

Dr Mahmoud bin Mohammed al Maamari, a hydrologist with the Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, presented a paper on the ‘Project to Update and Prepare Flood Risk Maps and Flood Risk Management and Emergency Plans’.

The campaign highlights the growing risks associated with extreme weather events, climate change, and seismic activity. It seeks to enhance public understanding of multi-hazard early warning systems and promote effective emergency response strategies.

Targeting representatives from government and private sectors, civil society organisations, charitable associations, and local community groups, the initiative was designed to strengthen individual preparedness and bolster community resilience.

Structured around four core components – meetings and seminars, practical exercises, participation in local events, and distribution of awareness materials – the campaign forms part of Oman’s broader strategy to improve national readiness for natural disasters, especially tropical cyclones and tsunamis.
