Oman condemns deadly attacks on Sudan displacement camps

Muscat – Oman has condemned the recent attacks on camps for displaced persons in Sudan’s Darfur region that left dozens dead, calling the assault a “flagrant violation of international humanitarian law”.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Sultanate said it supports all international efforts aimed at ending the conflict in Sudan and ensuring the people’s right to live in security and stability.

The statement called on all parties to prioritise dialogue to resolve disputes and safeguard the interests of the “brotherly Sudanese people”.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres also condemned the attacks on the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps, as well as on the city of El Fasher, in North Darfur. He said El Fasher had been under siege for more than a year, depriving hundreds of thousands of people of essential humanitarian aid.

“Famine has already been detected in Zamzam and two other camps in the region,” Guterres said.

“Targeted and indiscriminate attacks against civilians are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law,” he added, calling for the protection of humanitarian and medical personnel.

According to UN figures, more than 90 aid workers have been killed in Sudan since the conflict erupted in April 2023.
