Massive earthquake strikes Myanmar, causes tremors across southeast Asia

Mandalay, Myanmar – A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, sending tremors across neighbouring countries, including Thailand, China, and parts of India. The earthquake, which originated near Mandalay at approximately 12:50 pm local time, caused significant structural damage and panic among residents.

Impact across the region

  • Myanmar: In Mandalay, the quake led to the collapse of several buildings, including historic structures and roads. A 90-year-old bridge crumbled due to the tremors, prompting emergency responses.
  • Thailand: Bangkok witnessed the collapse of a 30-storey skyscraper under construction in the Chatuchak district, leaving 43 workers trapped. Emergency services have been deployed, and the city has been declared a disaster zone, leading to the suspension of metro and rail services. The Thai Prime Minister declared a state of emergency in Bangkok.
  • China: The tremors were felt in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, with reports of damage and injuries in Ruili. Authorities are closely monitoring for aftershocks.
  • India: Mild tremors were recorded in West Bengal’s Kolkata and Manipur’s Imphal, though no major damage or casualties have been reported.

Omani citizens safe

The Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Bangkok has confirmed that no injuries have been reported among Omani nationals in Thailand. The embassy is closely monitoring the situation and has urged citizens to remain cautious and adhere to local authorities’ instructions.

Governments across Myanmar, Thailand, China, and India are assessing the situation, with disaster response teams on standby for potential aftershocks. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow official safety guidelines.
