Overtime compensation during Ramadan mandatory

27 Mar 2025

Muscat – Under Article 70 of the Labour Law, Muslim workers in Oman are entitled to reduced working hours during the holy month of Ramadan, with a maximum of six (6) hours per day or thirty (30) hours per week.

Should these limits be exceeded, employers are required to compensate workers in accordance with Article 71 of the law. This provision ensures that any additional hours worked are treated as overtime, entitling employees to extra wages or compensatory time off, as per the agreed terms.

The regulation aims to safeguard workers’ rights while respecting the spiritual significance of Ramadan. Employers are urged to comply with the law to avoid legal repercussions and to ensure fair treatment of employees during this sacred period.
