Bettina Steiger, an accomplished German expatriate artist in Oman, presents a new solo exhibition titled ‘Oman in Abstract’, inaugurated by H E Herr Dirk Loelke, Ambassador of Germany to Oman, at Matti Sirvio Art Galleria on Monday. Enamoured by the pristine geographical and cultural beauty of Oman, Steiger’s art brings together a collection of diverse visual and cultural perspectives that reflects her fascination for the positive energy found in the environment around her. “This exhibition serves as a dynamic platform to enhance international relations and cultural exchange between Oman and Germany, she tells Hubert Vaz in an exclusive interview. Excerpts:
Can you elaborate on the theme of this exhibition?
As a German artist living in Oman, my work represents a fusion of cultural influences and perspectives. By showcasing my interpretations of Omani landscapes, the exhibition celebrates the symbiotic relationship between artistic expression and cultural immersion, bridging the gap between nations through shared artistic experiences.
Through my abstract artworks, inspired by the natural splendor of Oman, the exhibition seeks to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Oman and Germany’s cultural heritage. Hence, the strong involvement of the German Embassy Muscat in this event.
What about Oman’s landscapes enchants you the most?
What stands out to me is the sheer diversity of Oman’s geography — from dramatic mountain ranges and shifting desert dunes to quiet coastal stretches and wadis tucked away like hidden gems. I first visited Oman in 2004 by chance, and it completely exceeded my expectations. Since then, I’ve returned again and again, eventually choosing to make it my home. As an artist, I’m particularly drawn to the lesser-known natural spaces — places that often remain under the radar even for those living here. Through my work, I try to bring these landscapes into the spotlight, offering a fresh visual perspective that highlights their quiet power and unspoiled beauty.
How different is your approach from several other artists who have showcased Oman’s natural splendour?
While many artists portray Oman’s landscapes through realism or traditional styles, my approach begins with being genuinely taken in by the beauty of the terrain — the colours, textures, and native flora. I let that initial sense of wonder sink in and observe how it stirs something within me. From there, I begin to build on that feeling, allowing it to shape what eventually appears on the canvas. My process is quite fluid. Sometimes it’s very tactile, involving texture and movement; other times it’s more structured. It all depends on how strongly I am moved in that moment and what the landscape brings out in me.
How difficult/easy is it to convey nature through abstracts?
Abstract art suits this theme well because it allows me to respond to nature in a way that’s personal and open-ended. When I encounter a place that stirs something in me, I don’t try to replicate it — I respond to it. That might result in layered brushwork, texture with salt, or soft washes of colour. The process is not always straightforward, but it mirrors how nature makes you feel — not always easy to explain, but deeply affecting. Sometimes it flows easily, and sometimes I need to step away and return with fresh eyes. That ebb and flow is part of what makes working in abstraction so rewarding.
Is there a message for the viewer?
One of the key messages of Oman in Abstract is to encourage viewers to look beyond the well-known and discover the quiet, often overlooked beauty of Oman’s landscapes. Over the years, I’ve been deeply moved by places that aren’t always highlighted in mainstream narratives — and through this exhibition, I want to bring those hidden gems into the light.
It’s also a reflection on the power of being outdoors. Personally, I find that time spent in nature — away from screens, noise, and daily distractions — has a way of restoring something within us. It clears the mind and fills a certain void we often don’t realise we carry in our fast-paced lives. This exhibition is not just a visual tribute to Oman’s natural beauty, but also a gentle reminder of the quiet healing and inspiration that the outdoors can offer.
As a German artist living in Oman, this is also a personal story of immersion and exchange. I hope visitors leave not only inspired by the country’s landscapes, but also with a deeper appreciation for the emotional connection we all share with the natural world.
I’m also truly grateful to the German Embassy for embracing this vision and so generously collaborating on the exhibition – Oman in Abstract. Their ongoing support has been instrumental, and it reflects a shared belief in the value of cultural dialogue and the stories that emerge when we connect more deeply with our surroundings.
How long do you propose to stay in Oman?
I have been a working professional living in Oman for over a decade, and it has truly become a second home. As long as life allows, I wish to continue living here — both as an artist and as someone who deeply values the cultural richness and natural beauty that Oman offers. The inspiration feels endless, and I’m grateful for every moment spent here.
Memerising beauty of Oman
My art captures the mesmerising beauty of Oman’s diverse landscapes, inviting viewers to embark on a visual journey through its deserts, mountains, oasis and coastlines.
