Muscat – To help residents keep their food fresh and safe during Ramadan, Muscat Municipality has issued key guidelines on proper cooling and storage practices. These measures aim to prevent food spoilage, reduce waste and maintain hygiene, ensuring that meals remain safe for consumption.
One of the most important aspects of food safety is efficient cooling, according to the municipality. Hot food should be cooled within two hours of cooking to prevent bacterial growth. Refrigerated food should be kept at a temperature of 5°C or below, while frozen items should be stored at -18°C or lower for long-term preservation. Dividing food into smaller portions before refrigeration helps it cool faster and more evenly.
Proper storage techniques also play a crucial role in maintaining food freshness. Cooked and cooled food should be kept in airtight containers to preserve quality. Overcrowding the refrigerator should be avoided to ensure proper air circulation, which helps maintain a consistent temperature. Additionally, keeping the refrigerator door closed as much as possible prevents temperature fluctuations and prolongs food freshness.
‘By following these guidelines, residents can ensure their food remains fresh and safe throughout Ramadan while reducing the risk of contamination,’ it recommended.
