Ibri – Over a thousand people gathered for a community iftar at the historic Al Iraqi Fort in Ibri, Dhahirah on Friday. A celebration of the holy month of Ramadan, the gathering was a showcase of harmony, community spirit and Omani tradition.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Suleiman al Abri, a key organiser of the event, said, “We have an iftar every year in one of our town’s historical landmarks. We chose Al Iraqi Fort this year. It is a symbol of our rich heritage. It was heartening to see over a thousand locals and residents come together in the spirit of Ramadan.”

Preparations for the event began well ahead of Ramadan. Invitations were extended and participants registered their names to ensure a well-organised gathering. The fort’s courtyard provided a majestic backdrop in a reflection of the rich history of the wilayat.

The gathering commenced with warm exchanges of greetings. As the Maghrib call to prayer echoed, attendees broke their fast together, embodying the values of unity and togetherness. Following the iftar, participants proceeded to the nearby Imam Jabir bin Zaid Mosque to perform the Maghrib prayer. They then returned to the fort to share a community dinner.

“This community iftar is not just about sharing a meal,” Abri said. “It is about reviving the beautiful memories of our ancestors and preserving the customs that define our Omani identity. Gathering during Ramadan and the two Eids has always been a cherished tradition in our communities.”

The event underscored the importance of cultural preservation, showing how historical sites like Al Iraqi Fort can serve as meaningful venues for community gatherings. “The event also emphasised the values of harmony and mutual respect, which are central to Omani society.”

Abri added that the community continues to preserve such traditions, which are deeply embedded in Omani culture, to ensure that the spirit of togetherness and respect for heritage remains vibrant for future generations. “The Al Iraqi Fort iftar was a testament to the enduring power of tradition and community spirit, reinforcing the significance of Ramadan as a time of reflection, unity and shared values,” he added.

“The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving cultural practices while strengthening the bonds that connect communities across Oman.”

Restored by Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in 2010, Al Iraqi Fort dates back to pre-Islamic times. Its two distinct towers, built more than 200 years ago, set it apart from other forts. The site is adjacent to the old Al Iraqi Market, Imam Jabir bin Zaid Mosque and a Quran school.
