Muscat – The Supreme Judicial Council of Oman has clarified that the requirement for a husband to obtain his first wife’s consent before marrying another woman is not part of Omani law but a condition set by certain embassies for their citizens residing in the sultanate.

In an official statement, the council addressed recent discussions on social media regarding the matter. ‘These embassies require first-wife consent before processing polygamous marriage contracts at notary public departments.’

The council added that this requirement does not reflect national law in Oman.

‘The Supreme Judicial Council has followed with interest what is being circulated on social media platforms regarding this matter. The council affirms that the requirement applies solely to some foreign embassies and does not reflect Omani law.’

The clarification aims to correct misconceptions and provide accurate information on legal marriage procedures in the sultanate.
