Director Jon M. Chu has revealed that the highly successful Crazy Rich Asians film franchise is set to expand into a TV show spinoff before a potential movie sequel. The 2018 movie, based on Kevin Kwan’s 2013 novel, resonated with global audiences, grossing over $239 million. It followed the story of a Chinese-American professor who discovers her boyfriend’s family is one of Singapore’s wealthiest.
While a sequel to the film had been discussed, Chu explained that the decision to move forward with a TV show instead was driven by the desire to explore the multi-dimensional characters introduced in the movie more deeply. “Every character we wanted to explore needed more room, and just a movie wasn’t doing it for us,” Chu shared, emphasising that a TV format would offer greater flexibility for character development. He also confirmed that screenwriter Adele Lim, who wrote the original film, is returning for the show.
Chu made it clear that while the spinoff will be the next step, the possibility of a Crazy Rich Asians movie sequel has not been ruled out. The TV show promises to bring back many of the beloved characters, offering fans a richer, more expansive look into the glamorous and complex world of the ultra-wealthy.
