Muscat – Ministry of Labour (MoL) has issued a set of guidelines to safeguard the health and well-being of workers during Ramadan while maintaining workplace productivity. The directives outline responsibilities of both employers and employees to ensure a safe working environment throughout the holy month.

Employers are required to provide flexible working hours and avoid long shifts, particularly for physically demanding jobs. For outdoor labour, working hours should be reduced to prevent fatigue.

Employers must also monitor workers for signs of exhaustion and ensure first aid and emergency response measures are in place.

Workplace safety education is encouraged to reduce risk of accidents, while stress management measures should be implemented to support employees’ mental and physical well-being. Travel should be minimised to prevent unnecessary strain, and cold water stations should be made available. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) must also be enforced, MoL stated.

Employees, in turn, are advised to take care of their health by getting sufficient sleep and consuming nutrient-rich foods at suhoor to sustain energy levels.

They should avoid sugary and caffeinated drinks at iftar to prevent dehydration and fatigue, MoL added.

‘Hydration is essential, and workers are encouraged to drink adequate water during non-fasting hours. PPE must be worn as required, and those with chronic health conditions or specific medical needs should inform their supervisors to facilitate necessary adjustments.’

Employees must also adhere to all workplace safety protocols to ensure a secure working environment.
