Muscat – In a major step towards wildlife conservation, the Environment Authority( EA) has successfully reintroduced 12 Arabian gazelles into their natural habitat in the Wilayat of Shalim and Hallaniyat Islands. This initiative is part of the national conservation strategy under ‘Oman Vision 2040,’ aimed at preserving biodiversity and restoring native species.

Hatem bin Salim Kalshat al Mahri, Head of the Arabian Gazelle Reintroduction Team in the Shalim and Hallaniyat Islands, highlighted that a thorough ecological survey was conducted before the release. The study assessed plant species and water sources to ensure a suitable habitat for the gazelles.
The animals were initially transferred from the Arabian Oryx Reserve in the Wilayat of Haima in the Al Wusta governorate to the Wildlife Breeding Center in Wilayat of Mirbat. Over a three-month acclimatization period, they adapted to the local conditions before being transported to their new habitat.
The transfer process was meticulously planned and executed by specialists from the Environment Authority. The gazelles were transported in specially designed crates via the National Ferries Company and released into designated pens on the islands.

To monitor their adaptation and safety, some gazelles have been equipped with GPS and satellite tracking devices. Additionally, trap cameras have been installed at various locations to observe their movements and overall well-being.
This reintroduction project underscores Oman’s commitment to environmental sustainability and wildlife conservation, ensuring the protection and growth of endangered species in their native ecosystems
