Ibri – In a display of national pride and to promote domestic tourism, more than 4,000 walkers participated in a heritage march in the historic village of Al Iraqi in Ibri, Dhahirah on Saturday.
Organised by local residents, the event aimed to highlight Ibri’s historical and archaeological significance while encouraging domestic tourism.
Speaking to Muscat Daily, Suleiman bin Saeed al Abri, one of the participants, said, “The march commenced at 7am from Al Iraqi Park, covering a 10km route that passed by historical and cultural landmarks.”
These included gardens, traditional buildings, bustling commercial centres, old markets and ancient mosques. Participants explored the enduring legacy of Ibri’s forts, aflaj irrigation system and landmarks dating back over 1,200 years, including those of the Nabhani and Yarubi dynasties.
Abri added that the march was an opportunity to celebrate Ibri’s history while fostering unity among different communities.
A notable feature of the event was participation of horse riders carrying the sultanate’s flag. More than 82 teams from various other governorates took part, turning the event into a national event. Traditional songs and patriotic anthems added to the event’s cultural significance.
The march concluded at 11am with participants returning to the starting point. Organisers noted that besides celebrating Omani history, the event helped promote health and fitness by encouraging physical activity.
“This initiative was part of a broader effort to boost tourism in Oman and showcasing its rich cultural heritage. By raising awareness on local historical sites, event organisers hoped to attract both domestic and international visitors, strengthening the tourism sector in Dhahirah and beyond,” Abri said.
