Muscat – A Russian edition of The National Museum’s website was launched on Sunday, marking an important step in enhancing cultural cooperation between Oman and Russia.
The National Museum is the first government entity in Oman – and the first museum in the Arab world and Middle East – to introduce a Russian-language website.
The launch event, held under the patronage of H E Salim bin Mohammed al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism and Chairman of the museum’s Board of Trustees, was attended by H E Oleg Vladimirovich Levitin, Ambassador of Russia to Oman, along with members of the State Council, other ambassadors, officials and culture enthusiasts.
Jamal bin Hassan al Moosawi, Secretary-General of the museum, highlighted the importance of the launch, describing it as part of the ongoing Russian Seasons in Oman initiative. “The Russian edition website coincides with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. It reflects our commitment to strengthening cultural ties and promoting Oman’s heritage to Russian-speaking visitors,” he said.
The launch event also featured a presentation documenting collaborations between the museum and Russian cultural institutions. Attendees toured the Hermitage Museum Corner’s latest exhibition – ‘Gifts of the Emirs of Bukhara and the Khans of Central Asia to the Russian Imperial Court’ – showcasing rare artefacts from Bukhara, Khiva, Khwarazm and Kokand, dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The launch of the Russian edition of the website aims to attract more Russian-speaking tourists and residents by offering greater access to Oman’s cultural heritage. The initiative supports the growth of museum and cultural tourism in Oman while highlighting the museum’s exhibitions, activities and role in promoting the country’s rich history.
Russian is the fourth language available on the museum’s website – following Arabic, English and Chinese – reinforcing its efforts to create a global digital platform that connects cultures and broadens international access to Oman’s cultural wealth.
