Saudi Arabia mandates national attire for male secondary school students

19 Feb 2025

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – The Saudi Ministry of Education has announced that all male students in public and private secondary schools must wear national attire, in line with directives from Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman.

The initiative aims to reinforce national identity and educational values among students, supporting broader efforts under Vision 2030 to strengthen cultural and historical awareness.

Under the new policy, Saudi students are required to wear the traditional thobe along with a ghutra or shemagh, while non-Saudi students must also wear the thobe, except those enrolled in foreign schools.

The ministry emphasised that national attire is a cornerstone of Saudi identity and plays a vital role in fostering loyalty and national affiliation. To ensure a smooth transition, awareness campaigns and educational programmes will be launched for both students and parents, highlighting the significance of the mandate in promoting national pride and heritage.
