Muscat – A student-led initiative at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) in Nizwa has devised an innovative way to tackle the environmental threat posed by the invasive mesquite tree.

The company, Prosoquit, is transforming the problematic plant into high-quality wood for the furniture industry.

Prosoquit was founded by Ahmed bin Zahran al Shuaili, who identified an opportunity to turn the mesquite tree, widely considered an environmental nuisance, into a sustainable resource.

“Instead of letting the mesquite remain a burden, we saw potential in it as a material for furniture production,” Shuaili said.

The project faced significant challenges, particularly in sourcing additives for wood treatment, which are costly and scarce in the local market. To overcome this, the team invested in extensive research, developing techniques like drying and heat treatment to enhance the wood’s durability and quality.

The mesquite tree, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, poses a serious threat to Oman’s environment.

It competes with native species for water and soil nutrients, and its thorns cause injuries, while its pollen triggers respiratory issues. Additionally, the plant’s pods, when consumed by animals, lead to tooth decay and can result in death. Its negative effects on soil salinity and groundwater further underline the importance of controlling its spread.

Prosoquit’s initiative addresses these concerns while also reducing emissions from burning the invasive plant. Mesquite wood, known for its resistance to heat, humidity, and termites, is now gaining recognition in local and international furniture markets.

Looking ahead, Prosoquit plans to diversify its products by manufacturing compressed wood panels and innovative furniture designs. The company also aims to expand into regional and international markets, creating job opportunities and contributing to Oman’s economy.

Prosoquit has gained recognition in events such as the Injaz Oman Competition and the First Annual Forum for Emerging Companies. The UTAS played a vital role in supporting the startup, providing incubators and facilitating its registration process.

By addressing the challenges posed by invasive species and promoting sustainable solutions, Prosoquit is setting a benchmark for environmental innovation in Oman.
