SQU student wins prestigious Asian research award

Muscat – Abdullah bin Mohammed al Lawati, a final-year student of College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), has earned global recognition by winning the International Best Researcher Award in the field of medicine at the Asia International Research Awards 2025.

Founded in Tokyo in 2010, the award is a prestigious global platform that recognises multidisciplinary research on cancer with the potential to create significant societal impact.

Competing against over 500 researchers from around the world, Lawati’s groundbreaking work stood out for its scientific innovation and academic excellence.

“This award is not only a personal achievement but a testament to the support of my teachers and the innovative environment at SQU,” said Lawati. “I aspire to inspire young Omanis to engage in research that addresses global challenges.”

In addition to this remarkable achievement, Lawati has published 22 scientific papers in high-impact international journals focused on critical areas such as cancer research, artificial intelligence and public health policies. His impressive academic portfolio has earned him numerous accolades at international conferences in countries including Canada, Bulgaria, India and the UAE, showcasing his ability to translate research into practical, real-world solutions.

Lawati also brought pride to Oman with his award-winning presentation at the 2024 Canadian Society for Pharmaceutical Sciences and Controlled Release Society Symposium, hosted by University of Alberta. He secured first place for the best scientific poster among 102 entries for his study titled ‘Prescription Patterns and Economic Analysis of Anticancer Medications for Breast Cancer Patients: Insights from a Three-Year Study at an Oncology Unit in the Sultanate of Oman’. The symposium attracted 400 delegates from countries such as Japan, Thailand, Australia, Brazil and the USA, with participation from top institutions like the University of Toronto, McGill University and University of Manitoba.
