Muscat – A group of 22 men and women is undertaking a 1,000km trek to mark the fifth anniversary of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s Accession Day. The ambitious mission, which began on January 15 from Seeb Club, is expected to conclude in Salalah on February 7.
Speaking to Muscat Daily from Thumrait in Dhofar, Badour al Salihi, the only woman in the group, said, “The idea for this extraordinary expedition was started by a Salalah Club member through social media and quickly gained momentum among adventure enthusiasts across the country. It reflects the unity and shared spirit of Omanis.”
The trek spans diverse terrains, including rugged mountains and vast desert stretches, giving participants an opportunity to experience Oman’s rich natural beauty.
Badour informed that the group has already covered over 800km, passing through several wilayats known for their historical castles and forts, which highlight Oman’s heritage.
Each day’s journey begins at 7am and ends at 8pm, with participants walking 40km to 60km daily. Along the way, they are accompanied by traditional songs, waving Omani flags and portraits of His Majesty Sultan Haitham. “This trek is not just a physical journey,” Badour explained. “It is a celebration of Oman’s heritage, a tribute to His Majesty, and a testament to the resilience and unity of the Omani people.”
The group has faced significant challenges, including changing weather conditions from intense heat, strong desert winds and cold nights. However, their support for each other, determination and short rest stops for refreshments and dates have kept them going.
“Our goal is to honour His Majesty, promote a sports culture, and showcase Oman’s natural beauty while walking in the footsteps of our ancestors,” Badour said.
Inspired by the success of this expedition, the group is already planning a new challenge. “Next, we aim to march from Seeb Club to Musandam, covering the entire stretch of Oman,” Badour revealed. “It will be a testament to our enduring spirit and love for our country.”
Encouraging others, she added, “I urge everyone, especially young girls, to engage in sports and believe in themselves. You can achieve anything you set your mind to.”
