Muscat – The foundation stone for a landmark project connecting Masirah Island to the national grid will be laid on Thursday.
Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) will lay the groundwork for the project at a ceremony in Masirah to be held under the patronage of H E Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals.
The project, the first of its kind in Oman, aims to enhance power supply reliability by linking Masirah Island to the Main Interconnected System (MIS). It involves construction of a 132/33kV substation on the island and a network of overhead and underground transmission lines, besides submarine cables spanning approximately 94km. The new infrastructure will connect Masirah to Mahout station and see a total investment of around RO72mn. MIS, which operates at 132kV and above, supplies electricity to most governorates. OETC also manages the country’s interconnection with the Gulf Interconnection Network.
The project is expected to boost Oman’s electricity network, improve grid stability and support future economic development.
