26 Jan 2025

New Delhi, India – The Indian government has announced the 2024 Padma Awards, recognising outstanding contributions across various fields. Osamu Suzuki, the late chairman of Suzuki Motor Corporation, has been posthumously awarded the ‘Padma Vibhushan’, India’s second-highest civilian honour, for his pivotal role in revolutionising the country’s automobile sector. Suzuki’s collaboration with the Indian government in 1981 led to the formation of Maruti Udyog Ltd, which transformed India’s car market and made affordable vehicles accessible to millions.

Among the ‘Padma Bhushan’ recipients are renowned playback singer Arijit Singh, celebrated for his soulful voice and dominance in Indian music, and Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar, who has had a stellar career in cinema spanning over three decades. Singh, one of the most beloved singers in Bollywood and regional music, has delivered numerous chart-topping hits, while Ajith Kumar remains a cultural icon in South Indian cinema with a massive fan following.

A total of 139 individuals have been honoured this year, including seven Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shree recipients. The awards highlight excellence in arts, literature, public service, trade, and other fields, with 23 women and 13 posthumous honourees among the recipients.
