23 Jan 2025

Muscat – The Sultanate of Oman has received widespread praise for its diplomatic and humanitarian efforts in securing the release of the Galaxy Leader crew. Crew members, diplomats, and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, have all expressed their gratitude for Oman’s pivotal role in the negotiations with the Ansar Allah group.

Marcos Gomez Jerez and Ator Zacarias from Mexico, along with Bulgarian ship captain Lumir Chayvin, thanked Oman for ensuring their safe return. Florin Marius Tacu, Romania’s Ambassador to Oman, also extended his appreciation to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and the Omani government for securing the release of a Romanian national among the crew. Anibal Gomez Toledo, Mexico’s Ambassador to Oman, commended the Sultanate’s commitment to humanitarian diplomacy, particularly in securing the freedom of the two Mexican crew members.

Hans Grundberg, the UN’s Special Envoy for Yemen, expressed his deep appreciation for Oman’s extensive efforts, describing the release as “good news and a step in the right direction.” He urged the Ansar Allah group to continue such positive initiatives in addressing outstanding issues. Grundberg further stressed that such measures are crucial for opening space for mediation, which, in the long term, could help revive the Yemeni political process—a development eagerly awaited by millions of Yemenis.

Oman’s continued role as a key mediator in regional stability and humanitarian efforts has been widely acknowledged, reinforcing its reputation as a trusted diplomatic partner.
