Muscat – The third edition of the Musandam International Sculpture Forum is currently underway in Madha as part of the Musandam Winter Festival. The forum, running till January 29, will see the creation of what is set to be one of the world’s largest marble sculptures, a monumental work of art highlighting Oman’s cultural heritage.
Speaking to Muscat Daily ,Ali al Jabri, Supervisor of the forum, described the sculpture as a milestone in the sultanate’s artistic journey. “This artwork is a tribute to Oman’s rich cultural heritage and artistic vision.” The sculpture will measure 20m in length, 5m in height and 7m in width, making it one of the largest marble creations ever attempted.
The intricate sculpture, weighing 120 tonnes and comprising 37 slabs of marble, features a mural inspired by an ancient Omani castle. It is being brought to life by Egyptian sculptor Saeed Badr.
The sculpture is divided into two sections – one side symbolising the historical and cultural significance of Madha and the other representing the future of sculpture and its role in the global art scene.
According to Jabri, the forum is not focused on just creating art. “These sculptures will not only enhance Musandam’s artistic appeal but also promote Oman as a cultural destination,” he said. He emphasised the fact that the creations draw inspiration from Musandam’s diverse natural beauty, history and cultural identity, offering visitors an immersive experience of Omani heritage.
The forum aims to position Musandam as a global hub for sculpture and art, attracting international talent and visitors. Jabri said the event aspires to establish a permanent cultural space in Musandam, celebrating both traditional and contemporary artistic expressions.
“This forum reflects Oman’s ambition to integrate its rich cultural heritage with the global art movement, enriching the artistic vibrancy of Musandam and adding iconic landmarks to Madha,” Jabri added.
