Muscat – The Oman Cinema Society (OCS) commemorated ‘World Cinema Day’ with a grand event held at its headquarters in Airport Heights. The celebration highlighted the society’s dedication to fostering Oman’s burgeoning film industry and spotlighted the remarkable accomplishments of Omani cinema in 2024.
Mohammed bin Abdullah al Ajmi, Chairman of the Oman Cinema Society, delivered an address in which he outlined the society’s milestones. He noted that Omani filmmakers participated in 46 international film festivals across 16 countries, winning an impressive 29 awards. Additionally, 12 members of the society served as judges at these festivals, a testament to the growing recognition of Omani cinematic expertise.
Over the past year, 27 members of the association contributed to festivals worldwide, with 25 films spanning various genres, including narrative and documentary, earning international acclaim.
The society’s 2024 activities included organising five international film festivals that attracted 1,373 submissions from 122 countries. Out of these, 164 films qualified, including 115 Omani productions.
Key supported projects included Corona Melody, directed by Habib al Balushi, and Dirty Feet, directed by Dr Talib al Balushi. These films exemplify the society’s commitment to nurturing talent and exploring diverse themes.
The OCS also hosted several training workshops in collaboration with local and international organisations, equipping members with advanced filmmaking skills. Furthermore, agreements were signed with various artistic and academic institutions to strengthen the development of Oman’s cinema sector.
The event featured screenings of Corona Melody and Dirty Feet, both of which resonated with audiences by addressing social and humanitarian issues through compelling storytelling. A live musical performance by Tahera Jamal enriched the occasion, creating a vibrant cultural atmosphere.
The celebration concluded with the recognition of key contributors to Omani cinema, underscoring the society’s continued commitment to advancing the Sultanate’s film industry as a vital cultural and creative force.
This year’s achievements solidify Oman’s growing presence on the global cinematic stage, showcasing its cultural heritage and artistic innovation to the world.
