A lens on heritage

26 Dec 2024 By MOHAMMED TAHA

Muscat – Omani photographer Sami al Hanai has become a prominent figure in showcasing the beauty and traditions of the Sultanate through his lens.
With a passion for preserving Oman’s cultural identity and promoting its tourism, Hanai has documented thousands of images that tell the story of the nation’s heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and the vibrant daily lives of its people. His photography stands as a testament to Oman’s rich history, offering viewers a glimpse into its castles, harvest seasons, and natural wonders such as the roses of Green Mountain.
Hanai’s journey into photography began in his childhood, fueled by an innate curiosity for documenting life and culture.

“I have always loved photography,” he shared in an interview with Muscat Daily. “Since childhood, I’ve been passionate about documenting people’s lives and culture. I joined the Photographic Society of Oman in 2014, and since then, I’ve focused on capturing images that carry a purposeful message to help society grow and prosper.”

His dedication to his craft has not gone unnoticed. Hanai’s photographs have graced the pages of prestigious publications, including National Geographic Abu Dhabi, where his striking visuals have highlighted Oman’s unique charm. “My photographs reflect the beauty of Oman and its people,” Hanai explained. “It’s my way of promoting Omani tourism and showcasing the authenticity of our culture and customs.”

Expanding his creative horizons, Hanai recently ventured into the realm of short video production, achieving a significant milestone by winning the grand prize at the inaugural China-Oman Short Video Competition held in Muscat in December 2024. Organized by BGP Oil and Gas Services in collaboration with the Chinese Arabic Channel, the competition commemorated the 20th anniversary of the China-Arab Cooperation Forum.

It drew participants from Oman and China, with 147 entries submitted across themes such as culture, life, tourism, trade, and economy.
Hanai’s winning entry, titled ‘He Who Has Not Reached the Great Wall of China Is Not Brave’, chronicled his journey to China in October 2024. The short film captured iconic Chinese landmarks, such as the Great Wall, while offering a glimpse into Chinese traditions like tea preparation and the renowned culinary delight, Peking duck. Through this visual narrative, Hanai celebrated the shared cultural ties between Oman and China. “The video is a reflection of my travels, culture, and the shared connections between Oman and China,” he noted.

The 5-minute film not only earned him the top accolade but also underscored the importance of cross-cultural exchange in his artistic journey. “This award is a great incentive for me to keep moving forward in this field. There’s no stopping,” he said with determination.
For Hanai, both photography and filmmaking serve as tools to celebrate Oman’s unparalleled beauty, rich traditions, and cultural diversity. “I use my work to preserve and promote Omani heritage, ensuring that future generations will appreciate the country’s diverse culture and landscapes,” he expressed.
Looking ahead, Hanai remains committed to his mission of supporting Oman through art. “I will continue to take pictures that promote Omani tourism and help support my country,” he affirmed. With his lens as his medium, Sami al Hanai continues to inspire and connect audiences across the world to the heart of Oman.
