Oman braces for heavy rain and strong winds

23 Dec 2024 By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – Oman is set to experience a dramatic weather shift as a trough of low pressure is expected to impact the country from Tuesday, December 24 through Thursday, December 26.

The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre has issued an alert for residents as this powerful weather system is forecast to bring widespread cloud formation, isolated heavy rains and gusty winds. Authorities are advising caution in affected areas, as these conditions could cause disruptions and pose potential hazards.

From Tuesday to Wednesday thick clouds are expected to form, bringing intermittent rain across several governorates, including Musandam, North Batinah, South Batinah, Muscat and parts of Dakhliyah. Rain will range from light to moderate, with amounts between 5-15mm. Winds will intensify, reaching speeds of 10-20 knots, creating less than ideal outdoor conditions. The strong winds may exacerbate rains, leading to rough seas and hazardous conditions along coastal areas.

On Thursday, the weather system is forecast to continue with heavy showers expected in Musandam, North Batinah, South Batinah, Muscat, South Sharqiyah, parts of Dakhliyah and the Al Hajar Mountains. Some areas may receive up to 15mm of rain increasing the risk of flash floods, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable regions. The Al Hajar Mountains and parts of the interior are likely to experience significant rains, raising concerns about poor visibility, slippery roads and the risk of landslides in mountainous areas.

Oman recorded some of the lowest temperatures this winter in the past 24 hours. The coldest temperature was recorded in Saiq – 6.2°C. Other notable low temperatures include 8.9°C in Yanqul and Thumrait, 9.1°C in Muqshin, 9.5°C in Sunaynah, 9.6°C in Mazyunah, 10.0°C in Mahdha and 10.6°C in Dhank.

The Early Warning Centre urged residents to remain vigilant, stay informed through official channels, and take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their property. Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution, especially on mountainous roads, and avoid areas prone to flooding. Additionally, maritime activities are likely to be disrupted, with rough seas expected along the coast.
