Muscat – President Aleksandr Lukashenko of the Republic of Belarus arrived in Muscat on an official visit on Saturday.
Sayyid Badr al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, led the welcome party to receive President Lukashenko and his accompanying delegation upon their arrival at Royal Airport.
An official reception ceremony will be held for the president on Sunday at Al Alam Palace.
His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and President Lukashenko will chair an official session to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation in various fields.
The visit builds on the foundations laid during Lukashenko’s first visit to Oman in 2007, which set the stage for enhanced diplomatic and economic cooperation. Over the years, both nations have expanded the legal framework for collaboration and facilitated high-level visits.
In October, Roman Golovchenko, Prime Minister of Belarus, visited Oman and held discussions with senior officials and Omani business leaders. The visit resulted in the signing of several memoranda of understanding aimed at strengthening investment and economic ties.
Earlier in August, Alexei Bogdanov, Belarusian Minister of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade, led a business forum in Oman. It witnessed the signing of key agreements, including an MoU between Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Belarus’ National Centre for Marketing and Pricing. An agreement signed between Oman National Engineering and Investment Company (ONIC) and Belarus Hi-Tech Park, focused on information, communications and advanced technologies.
Focus on trade, investment
Hamoud bin Salem al Tuwaih, Oman’s ambassador to Russia and Non-Resident Ambassador to Belarus, stated that the two sides will discuss ways to boost bilateral relations and exchange views on regional and international issues. “This visit will contribute to expanding areas of economic cooperation between the two countries, particularly in trade and investment in strategic sectors such as renewable energy, green hydrogen, heavy industries and technology,” he said.
Tuwaih highlighted Belarusian expertise in heavy machinery and technology, which aligns with Oman’s ambitions to develop a strong and modern infrastructure. “There are opportunities for Omani products to enter Belarusian markets while there is a platform for Belarusian products to be marketed in Oman,” he added.
The two countries have already signed several key agreements, including economic and trade cooperation, investment promotion and protection, political consultations, and avoidance of double taxation. Additionally, the chambers of commerce of both countries have formalised cooperation agreements aimed at supporting joint business initiatives.
Both sides also seek to promote their tourism potential. “The two countries are looking forward to developing new strategies for their tourism sectors that will showcase the unique tourism assets and capabilities of Oman and Belarus,” said Tuwaih.
