12 Dec 2024 By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Barka – The Environment Authority has confirmed that preliminary findings suggest the death of a sperm whale found off al Suwadi, Barka, was due to natural conditions.

The whale, measuring over 15 meters, was discovered with numerous parasites, indicating an underlying disease. Further laboratory analyses are underway at Sultan Qaboos University to verify the findings.

A specialised team spent 55 hours managing the incident, collecting samples, and burying the whale in collaboration with government and private agencies.

Sperm whales are iconic deep-sea creatures of the Sea of Oman and the Arabian Sea, capable of reaching 18 meters in length and weighing up to 57,000 kg. Known for their square-shaped heads and ambergris, they play a significant role in marine ecosystems.
