Muscat – The Sultanate of Oman, through the Oman Human Rights Commission, marked international Human Rights Day on December 10 with a special celebration dedicated to protecting and promoting the rights of the elderly. The event, held under the theme ‘The Pillar of the Nation: Sustainable Steps to Protect and Promote the Rights of the Elderly,’ was patronised by H E Sheikh Abdul Malik bin Abdullah al Khalili, Chairman of the State Council.
In his speech, Dr. Rashid bin Hamad al Balushi, Chairman of the Oman Human Rights Commission, highlighted the significant contributions of the elderly to Oman’s development and emphasised their role as a national treasure that requires safeguarding. He stressed that the Sultanate’s commitment to human rights is reflected in its laws, including the Basic Law of the State, which ensures the elderly receive vital social protection, healthcare, and emergency assistance.
Reflection on Achievements and Continued Efforts
Dr. Balushi also noted that this year’s celebration was an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in protecting the rights of the elderly and to renew the nation’s commitment to upholding human rights. He called for integrated efforts across sectors to ensure a dignified life for elderly citizens and to further promote their rights in line with both national legislation and international conventions.
A key part of the event was a dialogue session held on December 2, 2024, which discussed strategies for improving elderly care and included input from over 40 institutions, both governmental and civil society. The session resulted in practical recommendations for enhancing services for the elderly in Oman.
Exhibition and Recognition of Elderly Care Initiatives
The celebration also featured an exhibition showcasing various publications and artworks focused on elderly care. Institutions offering medical services and assistive devices for the elderly participated, alongside an exhibition of paintings and photographs of elderly individuals, organised in collaboration with the Omani Society for Arts.
In recognition of outstanding contributions, the ceremony honoured eight pioneering initiatives and projects supporting the elderly in Oman. Notable recipients included the Social Protection Fund’s Elderly Benefit, the Ihsan Association’s Ambulance Initiative, and the Al Masfah Village Initiative for the Elderly in Dima and Al Ta’iyyin. Other honoured projects included the Educated Village Initiative of the Ministry of Education, the Sweet Hearts Club initiative for elderly women in Bahla, and the ‘Our Elders, Endless Giving’ initiative launched in the Wilayat of Sadah.
Oman is committed to ensure the elderly are cared for, empowered, and integrated into society with dignity and respect.
