9 Dec 2024 Royal Cars Museum to open to public at Al Barakah Palace

Muscat – Royal Cars Museum at Al Barakah Palace will officially open to the public on Tuesday. The opening ceremony will be presided over by H H Sayyid Bilarab bin Haitham al Said on behalf of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik.

Established under the directives of His Majesty the Sultan, the museum aims to showcase the luxury, diversity and historical significance of the vehicles associated with Omani royalty. It seeks to serve as a source of inspiration and a key attraction for car enthusiasts and history lovers alike.

The collection features an array of classic, rare and sports cars, including personal vehicles of His Majesty Sultan Haitham. Visitors will also have the opportunity to view cars once used by the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the late Sultan Said bin Taimour and the late Sayyid Tarik bin Taimour.

Origins of the museum trace back to the early 1970s, when the late Sultan Qaboos, a known car enthusiast, began collecting classic and rare vehicles. His passion for automobiles started with two cars that had belonged to the late Sultan Said bin Taimour. Over time, additional vehicles linked to Omani royalty were collected, including modern and rare acquisitions.

In 2012, a dedicated museum building was established to house this collection, though access was limited to guests of His Majesty. With its opening to the public, the museum is expected to become a major cultural and historical landmark, offering a glimpse into the unique automotive legacy of Oman’s Royal family.
