Muscat – Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) will mark Human Rights Day under the theme ‘The Nation’s Pillar: Sustainable Steps to Protect and Promote the Rights of the Elderly’ on Tuesday.

To be held under the patronage of H E Sheikh Abdul Malik bin Abdullah al Khalili, Chairman of State Council, the event will see participation of public and private sector entities and civil society organisations.

This year’s celebration will focus on the rights and contributions of the elderly, acknowledging their vital role in nation-building and their active engagement in various spheres of life.

Oman places great importance on providing comprehensive care for the elderly, with legislation and laws designed to protect their fundamental rights and safeguard them from abuse and neglect.

Tuesday’s event will underscore OHRC’s commitment to raising awareness on the rights of the elderly and highlight ongoing efforts to support and protect them.

The programme will include several activities aimed at promoting the rights of the elderly and fostering societal awareness. A documentary film produced by OHRC will highlight the elderly’s role as a cornerstone of national development. A theatrical performance will address the challenges faced by the elderly, encouraging community support and understanding. Presentations will outline key reports and complaints related to elderly rights, showcasing the commission’s efforts to address these issues while providing national statistics on the status and challenges faced by this demographic group.

In recognition of national efforts, the event will honour initiatives and projects of government institutions and civil society organisations that have contributed to protecting and promoting the rights of the elderly. ‘This acknowledgment seeks to inspire further sustainable initiatives that enhance elderly rights and encourage their participation in society,’ a press release said.

The event will also review recommendations from a recent dialogue session held by the commission on December 2. The session involved representatives of state administrative units, the private sector and civil society organisations, focusing on strengthening collaboration to ensure the rights of the elderly and enhance services in line with international best practices.
