Sur, S Sharqiyah – The Environment Authority today inaugurated the ‘Laboratory for Developing Reserve Management Plan’ initiative for the Turtle Reserve in South Sharqiyah governorate. The initiative, running until December 12, aims to modernise the existing management plan in alignment with national development objectives and prepare a comprehensive structural plan for the reserve, alongside a portfolio of development initiatives and projects.
The initiative was launched under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Yahya bin Badr al Maawali, Governor of South Sharqiyah.
Salah bin Salem al Hajri, Director of the Initiative, presented an overview of the plan, highlighting its objectives, methodologies, and expected outcomes. The update will address challenges identified in the 2014 management plan and emphasize cross-sector integration to ensure alignment with national and environmental development strategies.
“The initiative is crucial to enhancing the management of natural resources and reserves in Oman,” Al Hajri stated. He also outlined the step-by-step approach, from drafting a management plan summary to hosting workshops, analyzing challenges, and finalizing approvals.
Declared a natural reserve on April 23, 1996, the Turtle Reserve covers an area of 120 square kilometers, extending from Khor Jarama to Ras Ruwais. Classified as a Category 4 habitat and species management reserve, it is globally renowned as a major nesting site for green turtles, with 6,000 to 13,000 turtles nesting annually between May and September.
“The reserve is one of the most significant habitats for green turtles in the Indian Ocean,” Al Hajri noted.
The initiative’s methodology will serve as a blueprint for updating other reserve management plans across Oman. The process involves engaging stakeholders, identifying gaps, and proposing sustainable solutions that align with the Sultanate’s broader development goals.
