Rustaq – The Al Hoqain Observatory in the wilayat of Rustaq, South Batinah, organised a 6km night hike on Friday, November 29, drawing over 200 participants.
The initiative aimed to foster a deeper understanding of astronomy while encouraging physical activity within the community.
Yousef Zahir al Salmi, a member of the Oman Astronomical Society and Supervisor of Al Hoqain Observatory, said the event sought to “promote the culture of astronomy and physical fitness among people”.
The hike began at 8pm in Al Hoqain, traversing villages along Wadi al Hoqain. Under the theme ‘Discover the Sky’, the event brought together hiking and adventure enthusiasts, alongside volunteers. “The participants included women and children from various wilayats,” Salmi said.
As the group walked under the starlit sky, they paused at key points to learn about stars, planets, and constellations. Salmi explained how participants were shown the use of the North Star for navigation during the night walk. Telescopes were set up at the end of the hike, allowing participants to observe and photograph galaxies and celestial bodies, sparking curiosity and lively discussions.
Refreshment breaks punctuated the hike, where participants enjoyed tea, coffee, and dinner. The walk concluded at 10pm, leaving attendees both physically invigorated and inspired by the celestial wonders above.
Salmi emphasised the broader goals of the event. “The march aimed to spread astronomical culture among members of society,” he said. The Al Hoqain Observatory regularly organises workshops and events for school students and astronomy enthusiasts, with a focus on reviving the legacy of ancient Arab astronomers and instilling a love for astronomy among the younger generation.
Looking to the future, Salmi outlined plans for expanding the observatory’s activities and infrastructure to host more astronomical events. He also announced a second night hike to be held in December. “We are cooperating with the Oman Astronomical Society to monitor celestial phenomena. We invite everyone to join us for the upcoming astronomical walk,” he said.
The event underscored the growing interest in astronomy within Oman and highlighted the role of local communities in promoting scientific awareness through engaging, hands-on activities.
