The Fifth Annual Festival for Persons with Disabilities 2024 was inaugurated today at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bousher under the slogan ‘Determination and Challenge.’ Organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, represented by the Directorate General of Sports Activities, the festival will continue until 4th December.
Her Highness Sayyida Dr Mona bint Fahd al Said, Assistant Vice-Chancellor for International Cooperation at Sultan Qaboos University, officiated the event. The festival features collaboration with the Ministries of Education, Social Development, and Health. It seeks to enhance the integration of people with disabilities into society, highlight their capabilities, and provide opportunities for education, training, and sports to improve their quality of life.

Mohammed bin Ahmed al Amri, Director General of Sports Activities and Chairman of the Festival Supervisory Committee, described the festival as a pioneering initiative in Oman. He noted that it brings together various sports for people with disabilities, aiming to improve their psychological, social, and physical well-being while showcasing their talents and aspirations. He added that this year’s edition introduces a new vision, including innovative sports and cultural activities, the launch of an electronic platform for participant registration, and the creation of a dedicated village for accompanying events. The festival will also feature corners hosted by government and institutional representatives focused on people with disabilities.

The programme includes 11 sports activities, with training sessions offered in game management, refereeing, and specialised disciplines such as bocce, boccia, and goalball.

The opening ceremony featured two visual presentations. The first reviewed the festival’s history and impact, while the second, titled ‘Beyond Borders,’ highlighted the potential and achievements of people with disabilities, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. Following the ceremony, Her Highness toured the festival village, which includes a health exhibition showcasing the services provided by participating entities.

The festival reflects Oman’s commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities and fostering a culture of inclusivity. By providing platforms to develop skills and celebrate talents, it reaffirms the Sultanate’s dedication to improving the lives of people with disabilities.
