2 Dec 2024 Oman tees off golf tourism with 40 international travel companies

Muscat – Oman is making strides in promoting itself as a global destination for golf tourism. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT), in collaboration with the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO), Oman Air, and private-sector tourism partners, is hosting a specialised workshop to boost this niche tourism segment.

The event has brought together 40 international tourism companies from Asia and Europe specialising in golf tour packages, alongside 20 local companies. These local participants represent golf courses in Muscat and tourism companies operating in this sector. The workshop aims to foster partnerships, highlight Oman’s golf offerings, and strengthen collaboration between international and local stakeholders.

Khalid Mohammed al Azri, Director of Tourism Patterns at MHT, emphasised the significance of the initiative. “This workshop is a major step in advancing golf tourism, one of Oman’s promising sectors. With its unique natural attributes, the sultanate is an ideal destination for golf enthusiasts,” he said.

Oman boasts several world-class golf courses, including Al Mouj Golf, La Vie Golf, Ras Al Hamra Golf Club, Ghala Golf Club, and Jebel Sifah Golf. These venues combine state-of-the-art designs with scenic landscapes, offering visitors a blend of sport and leisure. “Oman’s moderate climate for most of the year further enhances its appeal for athletes and tourists,” Azri noted.

In addition to the workshop, participants will embark on familiarisation tours of key attractions in Muscat, North Sharqiyah, and Dakhliyah.

Azri highlighted Oman’s strategic location and accessibility, with a robust airline network that connects the country to Europe, Asia, and beyond. He also pointed out that Oman’s rich cultural heritage allows visitors to enjoy golf while exploring the nation’s history and traditions.

“Investing in golf tourism supports sports tourism, diversifies the national economy, and creates job opportunities for Omani youth,” he stated. “We are committed to promoting this sector in collaboration with partners, including travel companies, international organisations like IAGTO, and hospitality establishments, to ensure an exceptional experience for all visitors.”
