Muscat – As National Day knocks on the door, Muttrah Souq is abuzz with patriotic fervor. Citizens and residents are shopping for merchandise featuring national symbols even as tourists soak in the festive spirit.
Shops are decorated in the national colours and patriotic songs blare out of radios and Bluetooth speakers building up the excitement and festivities at Muscat’s oldest market. According to shop owners, sales are significantly higher compared to the last few years marking a break from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shopkeeper Rajiv Patel noted a high demand for flags, the most popular item among customers. “Flags are selling fast with prices ranging from 500bz to RO5 depending on size. Citizens are opting for larger flags, while expatriates are keen on caps, scarves and pens,” he informed.
Patel added that many customers are buying in bulk, indicating a heightened sense of nationalism triggered by a stronger economy.
Muttrah souq is the preferred shopping destination for National Day items, offering a traditional experience at more affordable prices than malls. Homemakers, school children and professionals can be seen weaving through the market, immersing themselves in the festive spirit while bargaining for National Day merchandise.
Shopkeeper Ahmed al Siyabi is selling about 40 scarves and up to 50 flags every day. “This year, smaller flags are selling faster than larger ones, while young people are drawn to scarves and wearable items. The energy is definitely high and people are eager to participate in the celebrations.”
For many Omanis, shopping at the souq is a National Day tradition. Amerat-based businessman Mohammed al Abri has been visiting the souq since he was just a boy. “My family has a long history here. Every National Day, we gather at the corniche to celebrate. This year, I bought 50 pins and pens to distribute among my staff and am still shopping for flags and lights to decorate my home.”
He added that business is better this year and people are eager to show their national pride after the challenging period of the last few years.
Besides decorative items for homes and dresses, enthusiasts are also keen to decorate their cars. Mohammad Barwani said, “Every National Day, I take out time to deck out my car with designs inspired by Oman’s landscapes, capturing the beauty of our deserts, mountains and coastlines. It’s a tradition shared with my brothers and cousins; it brings us together in a unique way. It not only fills me with a sense of pride but also feels rewarding.”
