Sur – South Sharqiyah is actively pursuing investments to boost its economic and tourism landscape, and meet community aspirations while following a strategic development vision.
Governor Dr Yahya bin Badr al Maawali recently highlighted key projects, including the Qatari Diar resort in Ras al Hadd, scheduled to open in 2025, and industrial initiatives such as Madayn’s magnesium factory in Sur Industrial City.
The 10th Five-Year Plan features significant healthcare and infrastructure investments. Two tenders have been floated for the Al Falah Hospital in Jalan to address local healthcare needs. Pla-ns include a multi-purpose port in Masirah to improve connectivity. In Sur, multiple projects are in progress, such as the Sur Public Park, Mebam Tourist Village in Tiwi, a youth centre, rehabilitation and development of Tiwi fishing port, and development of the historic city of Qalhat.
Other urban planning initiatives include Phase 1 of Sur’s master plan, urban renewal of the Asilah area of Jalan Bani Bu Ali, development of Khor al Bathah and Khor Jarama, and the master plan for Masirah. Road infrastructure projects include dualisation of the Al Kamil wa al Wafi-Sur-Wadi Bani Jaber highway. The Sharqiyah Expressway works and dualising of the Al Kamil wa al Wafi-Jalan Bani Bu Hassan road is also advancing, while upgrades are planned for the access road to the Diar Ras al Hadd project.
Maawali highlighted robust SME growth in the governorate. Since the start of 2024, economic projects in South Sharqiyah have received over RO1mn in funding. He also announced funding for the Maritime History Museum in Sur which won the Bilarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design – a competition aimed at young Omani architects and designers.
