Omani embassy urges caution amid typhoon in Philippines

24 Oct 2024 By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Manila, Philippines – The Omani Embassy in the Philippines has issued an urgent advisory, calling on all Omani citizens residing in or visiting the Philippines to exercise caution and strictly adhere to the instructions of local authorities. This comes as tropical typhoon Kristine (Trami) continues to cause widespread destruction across the country.

The embassy emphasised the importance of staying alert and following safety measures, particularly in areas at risk of flooding, landslides, and other hazards. Citizens are advised to remain updated on the latest developments and to cooperate with relevant local authorities to ensure their safety.

This statement was issued in response to the severe impact of tropical storm Trami, which has led to at least 24 deaths and the displacement of over 150,000 people as it made landfall on the main island of Luzon.

Omani nationals who reside in the Philippines and those on a visit are requested to contact the embassy when necessary on (+63) 926 623 8028.

Tropical storm Trami, known locally as tropical cyclone Kristine, made landfall near the town of Divilacan in Isabela province with maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometres (59 miles) per hour. The storm has brought heavy rainfall and strong winds across northern Luzon, causing landslides and submerging villages, particularly in the Bicol region southeast of Manila, where most fatalities occurred. Rescue operations are underway, but thousands of villagers remain trapped in floodwaters. Despite the efforts of the Philippine Coast Guard, military, and police, many people remain stranded, with limited access to food and water.

The storm is expected to bring further heavy rainfall, and authorities have issued warnings of potential storm surges, flooding, and additional landslides in vulnerable areas. The Philippines, which experiences around 20 tropical storms annually, remains on high alert as rescue and relief operations continue.
