Muscat – A tropical depression over the Arabian Sea is likely to intensify into a deep depression over the next two days, moving westward towards the Dhofar coast and the Gulf of Aden.
In a weather alert, Civil Aviation Authority announced formation of the tropical depression over the southeast Arabian Sea. The system was centred at 16.0°N and 66.5°E, approximately 1,200km from the coast of Dhofar, on Saturday.
Starting Monday, the tropical system is expected to bring cloud cover and isolated rain, with occasional thunderstorms in Dhofar, Al Wusta, and South Sharqiyah. Between 10mm to 20mm of rain is forecast which may cause some wadis to flow, while thunderstorms and winds of 28kmph to 37kmph will reduce visibility due to dust.
On Tuesday, the system is predicted to impact a wider area, including Muscat, South Batinah, Dakhliyah and North Sharqiyah, with rain of between 10mm to 60mm. The intensity of rain may lead to flash floods and flowing wadis in affected regions. Winds are expected to be strong and visibility may be further reduced by dust and thunderstorms.
The weather conditions are likely to persist till Thursday with rain (20mm to 40mm) and thunderstorms.
