Jerusalem – The Israeli army said on Monday it deployed a new division for its ongoing ground operation in southern Lebanon.
A military statement said the army’s 91st Galilee Division, which includes the 3rd and 8th Reserve Brigades and the Northern Nahal Brigade 228, was dispatched into southern Lebanon.
“Since the beginning of the war, the 91st Division has conducted a significant amount of offensive and defensive operations in order to degrade and strike the Hezbollah organisation and its infrastructure in southern Lebanon, using ground and aerial strikes,” the statement said.
In recent days, the Israeli army announced the deployment of its 98th and 36th divisions in southern Lebanon as part of its broader offensive there.
Israel has been conducting relentless airstrikes since September 23 against what it calls Hezbollah targets across Lebanon, killing more than 1,200 people and injuring over 3,400 others. Tel Aviv also started a ground invasion of southern Lebanon on October 1.
Due to Israeli attacks on Lebanon, at least 2,036 people have since been killed, over 9,500 injured, and 1.2mn others displaced, according to Lebanese authorities.
Meanwhile, two major hospitals in Beirut’s southern suburbs are unable to provide service after Israeli forces conducted overnight airstrikes that severely damaged the facilities, a Lebanese medical source said on Monday.
The source told Anadolu on the condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media that Saint Therese Hospital and Al Rassoul Al Azam Hospital were both rendered inoperable due to the Israeli airstrikes.
Al Rassoul Al Azam is one of the largest hospitals in the Lebanese capital, the source added.
A medical source later said that the two hospitals had resumed operations hours after being rendered out of service.
Aid from UAE
The United Arab Emirates announced on Monday that it will provide US$30mn in humanitarian aid to support Lebanese civilians who have fled to Syria due to escalating Israeli attacks.
President Mohammed bin Zayed ordered the emergency aid, which is intended for Lebanese civilians who sought refuge in Syria, according to the UAE’s official news agency WAM.
The US$30mn allocation is part of a broader US$100mn relief package from the UAE for Lebanon, according to the report.
In addition, the UAE president authorised six additional flights to transport aid directly to Lebanon.
Amid the intensifying violence, a wave of migration has seen tens of thousands fleeing from southern Lebanon to Beirut and northern areas, with many reportedly crossing into Syria.
