Muscat – Despite ongoing safety campaigns, some motorists continue to allow children to stick their heads out of car sunroofs while driving. What should be done to prevent this risky behaviour? Here’s what Muscat Daily readers said –
Bader al Harthy, Public sector employee
As a father, it’s shocking to see children standing out of sunroofs while in motion. The government should enforce stricter penalties, and parents must be held accountable for such behaviour. Awareness campaigns are essential, but without fines or traffic point deductions, the problem will persist. Safety comes first.
Salma al Rashidi, Homemaker
Allowing children to stick their heads out of car sunroofs is extremely dangerous and irresponsible behaviour of parents. Immediate and stricter traffic laws, along with educational campaigns in schools, can help change this behaviour. It’s about saving lives, and small mistakes can lead to tragedies.
Mansoor Khan, Private sector employee
The only solution is heavy fines and jail. I believe agencies must educate both parents and children about the dangers of sticking their heads out of sunroofs. Awareness campaigns in the media can be effective, but real change will come when there are strict fines and consequences for breaking the law.
Fatma al Balushi, Homemaker
It is indeed very alarming how often we still see children sticking their heads out of sunroofs. Parents need to understand the serious risk of injury. The police should intervene more actively. Educating drivers on the consequences and holding them accountable will help prevent this behaviour.
Priya Gangadharan, Private sector employee
Stricter law enforcement, harsher penalties and public reporting systems are needed. Enhanced safety campaigns and driver education programmes are essential. Automakers could introduce technology to automatically disable sunroofs when the car is in motion or enable child lock for sunroofs.
Sanjay Kumar, Private sector employee
We need stricter enforcement of the law against allowing children to stand out of car sunroofs. Schools should also play a role in educating children about road safety, but ultimately, parents are responsible for protecting their children.

Suspend the driver’s licence for six months, suspend licence of repeat offenders for two years… This is very risky behaviour. So many children have fallen down from sunroofs and window and been seriously injured.
