Muscat – H E Salim Mohammed al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, visited South Sharqiyah governorate on Thursday to assess the progress of the ongoing tourism projects and explore future developments.

Dr Yahya bin Badr al Maawali, governor of South Sharqiyah, welcomed the minister, along with the deputy wali of Sur and several other officials from both the governorate and the ministry.

Their meeting with the minister focused on discussing key future tourism projects in the governorate and their current status, along with a comprehensive tourism development plan.

Key projects, which the minister reviewed included the Maritime History Museum in the wilayat of Sur, the Khor al Batah development project, and the ‘Sur Monument’ commemorating Sur as the Arab Tourism Capital 2024.

The discussions also covered potential cooperation between the governorate and the ministry to ensure the successful implementation of these projects while addressing any challenges that may arise.

The governorate’s initiatives to preserve the maritime heritage and the shipbuilding profession were also highlighted.

The agenda included an inspection tour by the minister, accompanied by the governor, to various tourism sites in Sur. They visited the Khor Al Batha development project, the site of the Maritime History Museum, the waterfront project in the Al Aija area, and the local shipyard.
