New York, US – The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly concluded its general debate with a strong call to avert the possibility of a full-scale war in the Middle East. Over the course of the debate, representatives from 190 countries addressed the Assembly, including 71 heads of state and 42 heads of government, as well as vice presidents, crown princes, deputy prime ministers, and ministers from across the globe.
Philemon Yang, President of the General Assembly, highlighted escalating crises in regions such as Gaza, Lebanon, and Sudan, warning that peace in the Middle East was precarious. He urged global leaders to take immediate action to prevent a comprehensive war in this volatile region.
Yang emphasised the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, calling for the immediate release of all hostages. He also appealed to those with influence over the conflicting parties to prioritise diplomacy and negotiations rather than supplying arms, in a bid to stabilise the situation.
He reiterated his opening remarks, stressing that a two-state solution, in accordance with relevant UN resolutions, was the only path to lasting peace and security for both Israel and the Palestinian people, as well as the broader region.
