Muscat – Despite repeated warnings from authorities, some motorists continue to allow children to stick their heads out of car sunroofs while driving, particularly during weekends. This behaviour has raised serious safety concerns, prompting experts and educators to call for immediate action to prevent potential accidents.

Safety experts warn that children riding with their heads or bodies outside vehicles pose a significant risk. Many are urging authorities to address the issue, stressing the need to protect young passengers.

“This is a highly dangerous trend that needs to be stopped,” said Sultan al Rawahy, a safety expert. He explained that sudden braking could lead to catastrophic injuries to children in such vulnerable positions.

Educators are emphasising the importance of awareness campaigns targeted at both parents and children. Ali Hamad, an educator, pointed out that this risky behaviour tends to increase during holidays and special occasions. “Parents often allow their children to stand out of sunroofs or hang out of car windows, not realising the serious dangers,” he said. According to Hamad, public messages and educational initiatives are critical in promoting safe practices among families.

The behaviour is particularly noticeable during weekends, said taxi driver Salem al Badi. He highlighted the fact that children leaning out of cars can be a distraction to other drivers, creating dangerous situations. “It’s not just about the kids’ safety; it’s also about how they affect other drivers on the road,” he warned.

Authorities are being urged to step up efforts to curb this practice. Khalid Ahmed Ali Tabook, head of Ministry of Social Development’s Family Counselling and Guidance Department in Dhofar, recommended using educational videos to demonstrate the risks involved and reinforce positive safety behaviour. “Children need to be taught the importance of road safety from a young age, and we must use every tool available to make this message clear,” he stressed.

Experts agree that a combination of strict regulations, public awareness campaigns and community involvement is essential to address this disturbing trend and ensure the safety of children on roads.
