18 Sep 2024 RO9mn Al Mughsayl Bridge to ease traffic, boost tourism in Dhofar

Muscat – The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology on Wednesday signed an agreement for the construction of a major bridge in the Governorate of Dhofar, along with a connecting road at a total cost of over RO9mn.

Al Mughsayl Bridge, with its striking decorative arches rising up to 45.9m, is set to become a major tourist attraction for its structure, while serving as a key traffic route in Dhofar.

Inspired by local architecture, the bridge will be constructed to ease the traffic flow while adding to the region’s scenic appeal, an official said.

The deal was signed by H E Said bin Hamood bin Said al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, and Syed Azhar Ali, Director of AZ Engineers & Partners.

The 630m long concrete bridge will be supported by 20 columns and two 13m high side pillars. It will feature six decorative arches, ranging in heights from 35.9m to 45.9m.

The project also includes parking spaces on both sides of the road, a lit walkway, and a crossing for easy access to nearby tourist spots.

H E Mawali said that the bridge will not only improve the road network in Dhofar but will also strengthen connections between Salalah and the western wilayats such as Rakhyut and Dhalkut. The bridge, with a design reflecting local architecture, will withstand harsh weather conditions, he added.

The Al Mughsayl Bridge project will also serve as an important international route leading to Yemen’s border crossing. Additionally, the bridge is likely to boost tourism in the area due to its proximity to popular destinations such as Al Marneef Cave, the Mughsayl Fountains, and Mughsayl Beach.

H E Mawali also noted the progress of other key road projects in the region. These include the recently completed Wadi Adunub crossing in Raysut and the ongoing construction of the Wadi Afool Bridge, both of which were sanctioned to improve links with the western wilayats.

Work is also underway on the Arjot-Sarfit road in Dalkout and the Harweeb-Miten project that will connect Dhofar’s western region with Al Mazyouna. The work for these two projects has progressed 20%. Other significant developments include the dualisation of the Raysut-Al Mughsayl road and the awarding of contracts for the Haima-Thumrait road, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
